The West Houston Zen Center, incorporated under the name of the Southwestern Son (Zen) Academy, is a non-profit Texas Corporation whose charter and membership is dedicated to proving the teachings
of Shakyamuni Buddha through Zen meditation and inquiry. The West Houston Zen Center is also home to Nam Son Sa Temple that supports the devotional practice of members in the traditional Korean
manner. The West Houston Center was established in 1986.

Zen Meditation Sittings
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Sundays: 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.*
Practice includes tea ceremony, chanting, mindful walking, two sittings, encouragement talk or reading
*Last Sunday of each month sittings begin at 8:00 a.m. and the practice continues to 10:30 a.m.
On Sundays we
also regularly have a silent tea ceremony and chanting practice (Heart Sutra in English, Great Dharani and others). Visitors and new or visiting Zen practitioners are always welcome! Please try to
come fifteen minutes early in order to get oriented.
West Houston Zen Center will hold its ninth annual fall retreat with Zen Master Dae Gak beginning at 6:00 PM Friday evening, October 23, 2015, running through Noon Sunday, October 25. On Sunday, following the retreat, retreatants are invited to join the Korean Nam Son Sa temple members for lunch.
The Retreat will feature Zen meditation 25 minute sitting periods, walking periods, Zen chanting, formal and informal Dharma Talks and personal interviews with Zen Master Dae Gak. Zen Master Dae Gak is the guiding teacher of the Furnace Mountain Zen Retreat Center located east of Lexington, Kentucky. He is also the author of Going Beyond Buddha and Upright with Poise and Grace - Coming forward as you are - Meditations for entering into the Moment. Participants are welcome to stay at the Center for the entire retreat to enhance the energy and focus of the group. Plenty of carpeted floor space is available to provide sleeping space for all. Several sleeping rooms and beds are available and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.
We are holding the requested donation for the sixth year at $130 for each participant. However, in accordance with our Korean Zen heritage, no one will be turned away. Please let Dae Mun Craig Learned know if you are having financial difficulties and arrangements will be made to accommodate your needs through a non-financial donation.

Chris Morgan, a long time member of the meditation group, passed away in July of this year. There will be a 49th day purification prayer for him on Monday, September 14th at Furnace Mountain. If you wish to attend the Nam Song Sa meditation group and participate or for more details, contact the Zen Center.
