Welcome to West Houston Zen Center

Welcome to the Website for West Houston Zen Center! The West Houston Zen Center, incorporated under the name of the Southwestern Son (Zen) Academy, is a non-profit Texas Corporation whose charter and membership is dedicated to proving the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha through Zen meditation and inquiry. The West Houston Zen Center is also home to Nam Son Sa Temple that supports the devotional practice of members in the traditional Korean manner. The West Houston Center was established in 1986.

Here is the events calendar for the rest of the year
In addition to the regular sitting schedule, we will have special observances on the days noted: Sun., November 29: Early sitting beginning at 7:00 a.m. with tea and breakfast at 8:10 a.m. We will have a short Dharma talk at 10:00 a.m followed by discussion. Wed., December 9: We will observe Buddha's Enlightenment day by continuing our tradition of sitting on the third floor with the Buddha and Bodhisattvas followed by a reading of enlightenment experiences and hot apple cider. Sitting will start at 7:00 p.m. Wed., December 23: Observance of the birth and teaching of Jesus. Our tradition is for anyone who wishes to to read a passage from the bible or other text that has special meaning to them. As Jesus was a rabbi, the text could also be from the Jewish tradition. Sitting will start at 7:00 p.m. Sun., December 27: Early sitting beginning at 7:00 a.m. with tea and breakfast at 8:10 a.m. We will have a short Dharma talk at 10:00 a.m followed by discussion.

The Retreat will feature Zen meditation sitting periods, walking periods, Zen chanting, formal and informal Dharma Talks and personal interviews with Zen Master Dae Gak.

Participants are encouraged to stay at the Center for the entire retreat to enhance the energy and focus of the group. Plenty of carpeted floor space is available to provide sleeping space for all. Several sleeping rooms and beds are available and will be assigned on a first come, first served basis.

The West Houston Zen Center is requesting a donation of $130 from each participant to cover expenses. However, in accordance with our Korean Zen heritage, no one will be turned away. If you are short on funds at this time, please let (Dae Mun) Craig know and arrangements will be made to accommodate your needs.
